# AI chat

The AI chat is a conversation with a language model inside a project. In it you can ask a question, have a text written or reworked, analyze a document, find information on the web, get a ready-made file, [build a chatbot](https://support.watbot.org/chatbots/ai-builder), a [mini app](https://support.watbot.org/mini-apps/ai-builder) or a [mini landing page](https://support.watbot.org/landings/ai-builder).

The AI can also [build a website widget](https://support.watbot.org/widgets/ai-builder) with links to messengers and a chat with a bot.

The AI can also [set up online booking](https://support.watbot.org/booking/ai-builder): create a branch, add services and specialists, set their schedule.

The AI can also [build an online course](https://support.watbot.org/schools/ai-builder): create a school and a course, write lessons and quizzes, add access packages.

The chat does not need a Pro subscription. You pay for the model's tokens — they are charged to ["AI Credits"](https://support.watbot.org/ai/balance).

## Where to find it

The "AI chat" button on the top bar of your account opens the chat of the project you worked in last. The button is visible if you have access to the chat in this project.

The chat is tied to the project: the model searches this project's knowledge bases and works with its bots. You can switch the project right in the chat — in the list above the "New chat" button.

## Conversations

On the left is the list of conversations under the "History" heading, newest first. The list loads as you scroll.

- "New chat" — start a conversation from scratch.
- Clicking a conversation opens it: the history, model and set of tools are restored as they were.
- A conversation's "⋯" menu has "Rename" and "Delete". A deleted conversation cannot be restored.

The platform names a conversation itself based on the first message. You can replace the name with your own.

> [!NOTE]
> Conversations are personal. Each team member sees only their own conversations — other people's are not in the list, including for the project owner.

You can collapse the side panel with the arrow at the top. It collapses on its own when a document or a bot scheme opens on the right.

## Message

Type your question in the "Ask any question" field and press Enter. Shift+Enter starts a new line.

Code pasted into the field is formatted as a block with highlighting. You can choose the block's language in its header.

Under each message there are buttons:

- **"Copy"** — on your messages and on responses.
- **"Edit"** — on your message. After you send the corrected text, all messages below it are deleted and the conversation continues from that point.
- **"Regenerate"** — on a response. The model answers the same question again, using the currently selected model. Messages below this response are deleted.

Under a response is the name of the model that gave it.

### AI questions with answer options

When the AI needs your decision — which option to choose, whether to go on — it can ask a question with a card of answer options: from two to four buttons. Click the one you want — the chosen option is sent as your answer, and the AI goes on.

You do not have to click a button: you can answer in your own words in the message field. Once you have answered, the card's buttons become inactive.

Such questions can come up in any conversation, not only while building.

## Model

The name of the selected model is on the button on the right of the input field. Click it to open the menu:

- at the top — your favorite models;
- "All models" — the full list grouped by developer. The star next to a model adds it to your favorites or removes it;
- "Reasoning" — the thinking level, if the model supports it;
- "Compress context" — appears when the conversation has at least two messages.

![The model menu in the message field](https://support.watbot.org/_media/en/08-ai/_images/models-menu.webp?v=1791781230)

You can change the model in the middle of a conversation: the next response will come from the new model, and the history stays.

A new conversation uses the first model from your favorites. How to choose a model for a task is on the [AI models](https://support.watbot.org/ai/models) page.

### Reasoning

Some models "think" before answering: they break the task down step by step. This helps with complex questions, but the response takes longer and token usage grows.

Choose a level in the "Reasoning" menu. The set of levels depends on the model: "Minimal", "Low", "Medium", "High", "Very high", "Maximum". Some models have a single level — "On". "Off" is always available.

The selected level is shown on the button next to the model name. If the model cannot reason, the "Reasoning" item is not in the menu.

The thinking process and tool calls are shown in the response as a collapsed group of steps. Click it to expand.

### Compress context

The longer the conversation, the more expensive each next response: the model receives the whole history every time. "Compress context" replaces the history with a short summary written by the selected model.

> [!WARNING]
> Compression cannot be undone: the previous messages and attachments of the conversation are deleted, and only the summary remains.

## Stopping a response

While the model is responding, the send button turns into the "Stop" button. After you stop it, the part of the response the model managed to write stays in the conversation. The work already done is paid for.

## If you close the tab

The response is prepared on the server and does not depend on the open page. If you close the tab, reload the page or switch to another conversation, the model keeps working.

If you return to the conversation while the response is still being written, you will see an indicator and the "Stop" button. When the response is ready, it appears in the conversation in full.

## What a response looks like

A response is formatted: headings, lists, tables, code blocks with highlighting, formulas. Code blocks and tables have a copy button; a table can also be downloaded.

A picture whose address already appeared in the conversation — in your messages, search results, pages the model has read, the knowledge base or the help center — is shown in the response right away. Instead of a picture at an address the model wrote itself, the response has a "Picture from … — open" link: the picture opens in a new tab only when you click it. Why — see the [Limits and security](https://support.watbot.org/ai/limits#links-the-model-made-up) page.

If you turn on the "Extended formatting" tool, the model can add colored callout blocks and highlight text with a marker. Tools are described on the [Tools and files in the chat](https://support.watbot.org/ai/tools) page.

## If something does not work

- **"Not enough AI Credits. Top up your balance to continue."** The project owner's "AI Credits" balance is empty. The message was not sent and stays in the input field. The owner will see the "Top up" button; a team member needs to contact the owner.
- **"Too many responses at once. Wait for the generation in other chats to finish."** You started responses in several conversations at once. Wait until one of them finishes, or stop it.
- **"The model is currently unavailable".** The request to the model failed. Repeat the message later or choose another model.
- **"The model "…" is no longer available — the chat continues on …".** The model the conversation was using has been removed from the catalogue. The history is in place, and the default model will respond.
